We are extremely delighted to announce that UNPAR Vis Team has emerged as the semi-finalist of the 20th Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot, surpassing every previous record of Indonesian universities in past years. Additionally, the team also managed to bring home Honorable Mention for the Best Claimant Memorandum (David Hunter Award), while our oralists, Shaunelee Alcinia Yanni, won the 1st Runner-up for the Best Oralist Award, and, Lovelyn Tayuwijaya, bagged the Honourable Mention for the Best Oralist Award. Out of 111 participating teams, the team had the privilege of having Professor Ulrich G. Schroeter presided over the semifinals rounds. To reach this stage, the team had to face various prestigious universities, such as the National University of Singapore, University of Vienna, Göttingen University.
“During the Top 32 announcement, we were deeply touched when Universitas Katolik Parahyangan was mentioned, especially since we were the only representative from Indonesia to advance to the elimination rounds. However, the tension from there mounted on and the competition became more cutthroat. As we kept advancing, the questions became more sharp like knives peeling away every single layer of our arguments. Emerging as the semi-finalist this year brings us joy like no other. The team is very proud to bring this award back home to Indonesia!” said Imelda Chai, one of Unpar’s Vis Team Members.

The Vis East Competition is one of the largest arbitration competitions in Asia and even the world, held annually in Hong Kong. This year is the first time that the Vis moot is held offline again since the Covid-19 pandemic started two years ago.
These achievements are the result of the extraordinary support from parties who have contributed their valuable knowledge and time to help the team in their preparation. The Unpar Vis team was trained and guided by lecturers, John Lumbantobing, S.H., LL.M., FCIArb. and Theodora Saputri, S.H., LL.M. FH Unpar, and student coaches, Elvina (FH UNPAR ‘19, Vis ‘21 & ‘22), Tiara Ananda Kartika, S.H. (FH UNPAR ‘19, Vis ‘21 & ‘22), and Myria Athayyani Adnindhiya (FH UNPAR ‘19, Vis ‘21 & ‘22). In preparing the written and oral arguments, foreign counsels Gustaaf Reerink (Ali Budiardjo, Nugroho, Reksodiputro), Jason Bonin (Adnan Kelana Haryanto & Hermanto), and Lucas Mascarade (Armand Yapsunto Muharamsyah and Partners) also gave their invaluable insights and guidance. We also thank our beloved alumni Made Susanti (Makarim & Taira S, FH Unpar ‘07, Jessup ‘11 & ‘12), Benedicta Frizka (Makarim & Taira S, FH Unpar ‘12, Jessup ‘14, Manfred ‘15 ), Anastasia Anggita (Makarim & Taira S., FH Unpar ’14, Jessup ‘16 & ‘17), Michelle Angelina (Ali Budiardjo, Nugroho, Reksodiputro, FH Unpar ‘15, Vis ‘17 & ‘18), Sharleen Marfian (Hutabarat Halim & Rekan, FH Unpar ‘15, Vis ‘18), Gregorius Sachio Wibisono (Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, FH UNPAR ‘16, Jessup ‘18 & ‘19), Aurelia Livya (Makarim & Taira S, FH UNPAR ’17, Jessup ’19 & ’20), Evelyn Tanissa (Hendra Soenardi, FH UNPAR ‘17, Vis ‘19 & ‘20), and Jason Sumarauw (Ali Budiardjo, Nugroho, Reksodiputro, FH UNPAR ‘17, Vis ‘19 & ‘20) for helping the Unpar Vis team to gain these historical achievements.
