We are pleased to announce that Unpar’s Jessup Team finished as the first runner up in the Indonesian national rounds of the 2023 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and will advance to the White & Case international rounds. During the Indonesian national rounds, held between 4 – 11 February 2022, the Unpar Jessup team went against Universitas Indonesia in the quarterfinals, Universitas Airlangga in the semifinals, and Universitas Pelita Harapan in the finals.
The Unpar Jessup Team, comprised of Evan Jonathan (2020), Ignatius Vito (2020), Oliver Eide (2020), Beatrix Bunga (2021), and Sharon Karli (2021), competed as Agents representing the Kingdom of Aglovale and the State of Ragnell on a case involving the interpretation of a peace treaty, deadly attacks in allegedly occupied territory, unilateral economic sanctions, and failure to dispose of hazardous waste properly. Our oralists, Evan Jonathan and Oliver Eide, also came in as 4th and 6th best oralist respectively.
“The team is proud and honoured to represent Indonesia again in the international rounds this year. But we acknowledge that we still have much to improve to show a better performance in the international rounds,” one of the team members, Sharon Karli, remarked. “This year’s competition has its own challenges like no other year. For the Unpar Jessup Team, this is the first year of offline mooting preparation again since the pandemic started in early 2020. Combined with the shortened time frame for the national rounds, this year’s competition challenged the team’s grit and teamwork. I am grateful we overcame it and achieved the first runner up of this year’s Jessup Indonesian National Rounds.”

The Philip C. Jessup moot is a simulation of a fictional dispute between two countries before the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It has long presented an opportunity for law students to collaborate with each other. Notable past achievements from the Unpar Jessup Team include the 2021 and 2022 Jessup International Rounds where the Unpar Jessup Team received the Hardy C. Dillard Award for the 17th Best Combined Memorial in the World and solely represented Indonesia in the Elimination Rounds, respectively.
Amidst the transition from online to offline, the team’s preparations were not limited to conducting legal research, extensive discussions, memorial drafting, and oral advocacy practices offline. While preparing the memorials and oral pleadings, the team received great mentorship and support from faculty advisors Adrianus Adityo Vito Ramon, S.H., LL.M. and Anna Anindita Nur Pustika, S.H., M.H.; lecturer Anna Fidelia Elly Erawati, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D.; student coaches Mahdiyah Basuki (FH Unpar ‘19, Jessup ‘21 & ‘22) and Nadya Theresia (FH Unpar ‘19, Jessup ‘21 & ‘22); foreign counsels Vik Tang and Rachita Bhagnani (Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung); and alumni Heru Muzaki (LHBM Counsel – FH Unpar ‘03, Jessup ‘08), Vincent Bellamy (LHBM Counsel – FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘08), Aiqinea Tarigan (Pashouses – FH Unpar ‘13, Jessup ‘15 & ‘16), Merlyn Margaretha (Norton Rose Fullbright – FH Unpar ‘14, Jessup ‘16 & ‘17), Wishnu Adisatya (FH Unpar ‘16, Asia Cup ‘17, IHL ‘17, Jessup ‘19), Aurelia Livya (Makarim & Taira S – FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20), Theo Prawiradirdja (Hendra Soenardi – FH Unpar ‘17, IHL ‘18, Jessup ‘20), Vincent Jiadi (LHBM Counsel –FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20), and Sabella Jane Tjasa (Walalangi & Partners – FH Unpar ‘18, Jessup ‘20 & ‘21).
“The journey is not over yet. We will give our best effort to improve significantly,” Sharon stated, “we are excited to obtain more achievements in the international rounds.”
