We are pleased to announce that Unpar’s ICC team finished as the top 34 out of 101 teams in the 2022 International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition. This year marks the first time UNPAR has joined the International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition, with team members consisting of Angelica Audrey (2019), Natasya Anzany Putri (2019), Ignatius Vito (2020), and Oliver Eide (2020).

The International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition has been the world’s leading moot on international criminal law, garnering more than 100 teams competing from over 50 countries annually. Unlike most moots featuring two opposing sides, the ICC Moot features three of the following four sides in any given edition: prosecution, defence, government, and victims. This year, participating teams competed as counsel for the prosecution, defendant, and victims.

The 2022 ICC moot problem challenged the Pre-Trial Chamber’s denial of the Prosecution’s request for confirmation of charges pertaining to the use of killer drones in a counter piracy operation by the Defendant, Agon Megor of The Republic of Ibbin. In addition, legal issue concerning a single Victims’ Representative was also raised.

The Team’s preparation started in November 2021, when the moot problem was first distributed. The Team conducted extensive legal research concerning procedural and substantive issues of international criminal law, memorial drafting, and oral advocacy practices online. In the oral rounds, the Unpar ICC Team went against formidable opponents from Singapore Management University, Ateneo de Manila University, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, and this year’s ICC Moot champion, Honorable Society of the King’s Inns.

This result would not have been achieved without the immense support of faculty advisors Adrianus Adityo Vito Ramon, S.H., LL.M (Adv.), Yunita, S.H., LL.M and student coaches Vincent Jiadi, S.H. (FH UNPAR ’17, Jessup ‘19-20), Christopher Cusan, S.H. (Hadiputranto Hadinoto & Partners, FH UNPAR’ 17, IHL’ 20, Vis’ 21); and Sabella Jane, S.H. (Walalangi & Partners, FH Unpar’18, Jessup’ 20-21).

Throughout the process of memoranda drafting and oral pleading preparations, the team received great guidance from foreign counsel Frederic Draps (Ashurst, Oentoeng Suria & Partners; external advisor Dr. Harry Elias, B.A., LL.M., MBA., J.D. (Academic Director at Temasek Independent School); and alumni Heru Muzaki, S.H., LL.M. (LHBM Counsel, FH UNPAR’ 3, Asia Cup’ 06, Manfred’ 07, Jessup’ 08), Dimas Prasetyo, S.H. (FH UNPAR’ 07, Asia Cup’ 08, IHL’ 09, WHR’ 11), Wishnu Adisatya, S.H. (Legisperitus Lawyers, FH UNPAR’ 16, Asia Cup’ 17, IHL’ 17, Jessup’ 19), Kevin Setiadi, S.H. (FH UNPAR’ 16, IHL’ 17-18), and Theo Prawiradirja, S.H. (Henda Soenardi, FH UNPAR’ 17, IHL’ 18, Jessup’ 20).

“We greatly thank everyone who has guided the Team in this period of preparation.” Ignatius Vito said, “We hope that this year’s achievement will continue to pave the way for Unpar’s future participation and accomplishment in the ICC Moot.”
