For the first time in Unpar’s Jessup history, we are thrilled to announce that the Unpar Jessup team has finished as the 15th Best Team in the international rounds of the 2022 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, advancing to the international elimination rounds as the only Indonesian team. Mahdiyah Basuki (2019) and Shaunelee Alcinia Yanni (2020) placed in the Top 100 and Top 150 Best Oralists in the Preliminary Rounds, respectively. In the Advanced Rounds, Nadya Theresia (2019) placed as the 30th Best Oralist and Mahdiyah Basuki (2019) placed as the 81st Best Oralist.

This year, the 2022 White & Case Philip C. Jessup International Rounds had more than 160 teams competing from all around the world from 85 jurisdictions. After successfully winning all the matches against the Belarusian State University, Universidad de Los Andes, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and ILS Law College in the Preliminary Rounds, the team advanced as one of the top 94 teams to the Advanced Rounds.

Despite meeting formidable opponents from Universiteit van Amsterdam, Kathmandu University, East China University of Political Science and Law, and Case Western Reserve University in the Advanced Rounds, the team successfully advanced as Indonesia’s sole representative in the Elimination Rounds. Placing in the Top 32, the team went against the University of New South Wales from Australia. This marks the highest achievement by Unpar in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

After finishing as First Runner-Up in the 2022 Jessup Indonesian National Rounds, the international rounds presented a new challenge like never before for the Unpar Jessup team as 4 out of 5 team members were infected with COVID-19 days before the International Preliminary Rounds began. With a heavy heart, the team had to return home and be quarantined respectively. This situation is very different from the national round where the Unpar Jessup team competed from the moot court room of the Unpar Faculty of Law.

“Competing as a team separately has its own challenges,” Nadya Theresia, the team’s principal drafter and President of PILS said, “though the situation was far from ideal, the team persevered and made the most of what we had. We were not discouraged and adapted quickly. Despite all the challenges we faced, I am incredibly grateful for this achievement. We will use what we have learned this year to make Unpar and Indonesia even prouder in the next competition.”

This achievement would not have been obtained without the tremendous support of faculty advisors Ms. Theodora Pritadianing Saputri (FH Unpar 2006), Ms. Anna Anindita Nur Pustika, S.H., M.H.; and student coach Aurelia Livya (FH Unpar 2017, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20).

Throughout the process of preparing the memorials and the oral pleadings, the team received extensive guidance from foreign counsels Vik Tang and Rachita Bhagnani (Foreign Counsels, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung), Carol Lim (Foreign Counsel, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners); and alumni Aryadharma Alimsardjono (South East Asia Counsel, Netflix – FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘08), Vincent Bellamy (FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘08), Brinanda Lidwina Kaliska (Legal Counsel, Traveloka – FH Unpar ‘09, Jessup ‘11 & ‘13), Tyas Hardianto (Ginting & Reksodiputro Allen & Overy – FH Unpar ‘10, Jessup ‘13), Joselyne Lesmana (Legal Counsel, AC Ventures – FH Unpar ‘13, Asia Cup ‘15), Aloysius Aryo Prasetyo (Analyst, Indonesia Infrastructure Finance – FH Unpar ‘14, Vis ‘17), Merlyn Margaretha (Norton Rose Fullbright, FH Unpar ‘14, Jessup ‘16 & ‘17), Andira Trianugrah Putra (Tiendas Law Office – FH Unpar ’14, Jessup ’18), Rana Cinta Rahmania (Bagus Enrico & Partners, FH Unpar ‘16, Jessup ‘18), Clemens Danang (Ginting & Reksodiputro Allen & Overy – FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20), Theo Prawiradirdja (Hendra Soenardi – FH Unpar ’17, IHL ‘18, Jessup ‘20), and Vincent Jiadi (FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20).

“We whole-heartedly thank and congratulate everyone who has helped the team,” Nadya Theresia said, “this achievement is for all of us. With grit, perseverance, and resilience, this is only the beginning of Unpar’s many more achievements to come. We are excited for what our future teams will accomplish.”
