Unpar Jessup Team Advances To Represent Indonesia In The International Rounds of The 2022 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

We are proud to announce that Unpar’s Jessup team is advancing as one of five teams representing Indonesia in the international rounds of the 2022 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Consisting of Mahdiyah Basuki (2019), Nadya Theresia (2019), Vania Anastasia Seffany (2019), Shaunelee Alcinia Yani (2020) and Evan Jonathan (2020), the Unpar Jessup team finished as the first runner up in the Jessup competition’s Indonesian national rounds on Sunday, 28 February 2022. Mahdiyah Basuki also took home the third Best Oralist award.

The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition is one of the most prestigious in the world, and is often dubbed the ‘World Cup’ for international law students around the globe with more than 600 teams participating annually.  Competing as Agents representing the Democratic Republic of Antara and the Velan Kingdom of Ravaria in the Case Concerning the Suthan Referendum, this year’s case delves into the freedom of expression on the internet, international cyber law, foreign influence in domestic politics, and the principle of non-intervention in international law.

In 2021, the Unpar Jessup team won the Hardy C. Dillard Award for the 17th Best Combined Memorials in the world. In 2020, the Unpar Jessup team finished as the 2nd runner up in the Jessup national rounds and advanced to the international rounds of the Jessup.

“The team is proud of this achievement, but we are not complacent. We know we still have a long way ahead of us,” team captain, Mahdiyah Basuki, stated. “Two years into the pandemic, at this point we are accustomed to preparing for an international competition online, but it’s not without its difficulties. Building team dynamic with members you have never met before is certainly challenging. I am grateful we managed to overcome the challenges and come out of the national rounds stronger than before.”

The team’s preparations started from September 2021 when the moot problem was first distributed. Amidst the pandemic, the team conducted legal research, extensive discussions, memorial drafting, and oral advocacy practices online. In the national rounds, the Unpar Jessup team went against Universitas Brawijaya in the quarterfinals, Universitas Gadjah Mada in the semifinals, and ultimately faced Universitas Pelita Harapan in the final round.

This achievement would not have been obtained without the support of faculty advisors Ms. Theodora Pritadianing Saputri (FH Unpar 2006), Ms. Anna Anindita Nur Pustika, S.H., M.H.; and student coach Aurelia Livya (2017).

Throughout the process of preparing the memorials and the oral pleadings, the team received valuable guidance from foreign counsels Vik Tang and Rachita Bhagnani (Foreign Counsels, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung), Carol Lim (Foreign Counsel, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners); and alumni Aryadharma Alimsardjono (South East Asia Counsel, Netflix – FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘08), Vincent Bellamy (FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘08), Brinanda Lidwina Kaliska (Legal Counsel, Traveloka – FH Unpar ‘09, Jessup ‘11 & ‘13), Tyas Hardianto (Ginting & Reksodiputro Allen & Overy – FH Unpar ‘10, Jessup ‘13), Joselyne Lesmana (Legal Counsel, AC Ventures – FH Unpar ‘13, Asia Cup ‘15), Aloysius Aryo Prasetyo (Analyst, Indonesia Infrastructure Finance – FH Unpar ‘14, Vis ‘17), Merlyn Margaretha (Norton Rose Fullbright, FH Unpar ‘14, Jessup ‘16 & ‘17), Andira Trianugrah Putra (Tiendas Law Office – FH Unpar ’14, Jessup ’18), Rana Cinta Rahmania (Bagus Enrico & Partners, FH Unpar ‘16, Jessup ‘18), Clemens Danang (Ginting & Reksodiputro Allen & Overy – FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20), Theo Prawiradirdja (Hendra Soenardi – FH Unpar ’17, IHL ‘18, Jessup ‘20), and Vincent Jiadi (FH Unpar ‘17, Jessup ‘19 & ‘20).

We thank everyone who have helped guide the team in obtaining these achievements.

“We are proud of this achievement, but there is always room for improvement,” Mahdiyah stated, “we are excited to do even better in the international rounds.”
