Unpar Team Advances to Represent Indonesia in the International Rounds of the 2021 Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition

We are delighted to announce that Unpar’s Asia Cup Team is advancing as Indonesia’s sole representative in the Oral Pleading Rounds of the 2021 Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition. Unpar’s Asia Cup Team is selected as one of the best 11 teams in Asia that will participate in the Oral Rounds. The team consists of Evan Jonathan (2020), Michelle Lydia Hasianna Sitompul (2020), Shaunelee Alcinia Yanni (2020), and Lovelyn Tayuwijaya (2020).

The Asia Cup itself was established in 1999 by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has since “become one of the prime events in the field of the international law moot court competitions, and has offered outstanding opportunities to promote good fellowship among the representatives from Asian countries,” as stated in the Asia Cup’s official website. Previously, Unpar was ranked 3rd in Asia Cup 2015 as well as winning Best Memorials Award, having also won Best Memorial Award for Applicant and Best Oralist Award for Respondent in Asia Cup 2003.

The Asia Cup moot problem was released in April 2021. For the last three months, the Team has been conducting research and preparing arguments. This year’s moot problem involves the issues of legal protection for foreign shareholders, foreign investment and the suspension of wind power plants due to environmental concerns.

With perseverance and dedication, despite all the difficulties, the team qualified past the memorials or written pleadings round. “Despite the challenges we face in competing amidst the worsening COVID-19 Pandemic, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has guided us in the process. We are beyond elated that our hard work for months has allowed us to represent Indonesia,” says Evan Jonathan, a member of Unpar’s Asia Cup Team.

This result would not have been achieved were it not for the great mentorship and support received throughout the process. We would like to sincerely thank the student coaches: Vincent Jiadi (2017), Nadya Theresia (2019), Mahdiyah Basuki (2019), Tiara Ananda Kartika (2019), and Myria Athayyani Adnindhiya (2019); faculty advisors John Lumbantobing, LL.M, MCIArb. (FH Unpar ‘04, Jessup ‘07) and Theodora Pritadianing Saputri (FH Unpar ‘06, Asia Cup ‘09, Jessup ‘10); and Unpar law alumni: Adrian Panata (FH Unpar ’11, Asia Cup ’15), Jessica Bellamy (FH Unpar ’11, Asia Cup ’13, Jessup ’13 & ‘14), Joselyne Lesmana (FH Unpar ’13, Asia Cup ’15), Anastasia Anggita (FH Unpar ‘14, Asia Cup ’15, Jessup ’16 & ‘17), Merlyn Margaretha (FH Unpar ‘14, Asia Cup ’15, Jessup ’16 & ‘17), Clemens Danang (FH Unpar ‘17, Asia Cup ’18, Jessup ’19-‘20) and Theo Prawiradirdja (FH Unpar ‘17, Asia Cup ’18, IHL ‘18, Jessup ’20).

The Oral Pleading Rounds, typically held in Tokyo, is going to be conducted remotely (online) this year. But this does not waver the spirit of our team. “Now is the perfect time to push ourselves to tackle the challenge ahead. We are ready to do our absolute best,” says Evan. We wish the Team the best of luck for the Oral Pleading Rounds!
