The Unpar Jessup Team placed 2nd for best memorial and attained the 2nd highest raw points in the Asia Pacific regional rounds for the 2021 Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. This year, PILS’ Jessup team members are Unpar law students from the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019. Theodore Lukas (2017), Sabella Jane Tjasa (2018), Nadya Theresia (2019), Mahdiyah Basuki (2019) and Angelica Audrey (2019) competed as agents representing the United Republic of Aprepluya and the Democratic State of Ranovstayo in the Case Concerning the J-VID 18 Pandemic before the International Court of Justice. The 2021 Jessup moot problem is particularly relevant amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and delves deeper into global public health law, the International Court of Justice’s jurisdiction, and long-debated issues of anticipatory self-defense as well as diplomatic asylum.
In the Asia Pacific regional rounds, the Unpar Jessup team went against the National University of Singapore, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universitas Pelita Harapan, and Universitas Padjajaran.
This achievement would not have been accomplished without the immense support of faculty advisors Theodora Pritadianing Saputri (FH Unpar 2006) and John Lumbantobing, LL.M, MCIArb. (FH Unpar 2004); student coaches Aurelia Livya (2017), Vincent Jiadi (2017), Clemens Danang (2017) and Theo Prawiradirdja (2017); and the Unpar Law Alumni (ILUMNI FH Unpar).
Throughout the process of preparing the memorials and the oral pleadings, the team received salient guidance from foreign counsels Vik Tang and Rachita Bhagnani (Foreign Counsels, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung), Carol Lim (Foreign Counsel, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners); and alumni Alamo D. Laiman (Legisperitus Lawyers, FH Unpar 1999), Tyas Hardianto (Ginting & Reksodiputro – Allen & Overy, FH Unpar 2010), Vincent Bellamy (FH Unpar 2004), Heru Muzaki (LHBM Counsel, FH Unpar 2003), Anastasia Anggita (Makarim & Taira S., FH Unpar 2014), Merlyn Margaretha (Norton Rose Fullbright, FH Unpar 2014), Wishnu Adisatya (Legisperitus Lawyers, FH Unpar 2016), and Rana Cinta Rahmania (Bagus Enrico & Partners, FH Unpar 2016).
The 2021 Jessup presents a new challenge like never before for the Unpar Jessup team, as the preparations and matches were held completely online without a national round, and the team went against teams from foreign countries right from the start.
The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition is one of the most prestigious in the world. As the Asia Pacific regional round has ended, the Unpar Jessup team will compete in the global rounds of the 2021 Philip C. Jessup in March amongst more than more than 600 international teams.
